Compensation: $3000-$7000 depending on experience*

Technical Director

Position Summary

The Technical Director is responsible for developing and delivering a comprehensive technical theatre education curriculum while overseeing all technical aspects of CTE productions. This role leads the Production Team and Tech Team (Technical Theatre Workshop), providing instruction in areas including safety, stage management, and set, props, lighting, and sound design.

Working collaboratively with Program and Workshop Directors, the Technical Director plans, organizes, teaches, and supervises all technical components of workshops, productions, and show strikes. The role also supports Morning Mentors in developing technical theatre skills and contributes to overall program operations as part of the faculty team.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Development & Instruction

  • Develop and implement a multi-level technical theatre curriculum aligned with CTE’s summer program themes, goals, and objectives.

  • Teach and supervise Production Team members in all aspects of technical theatre, including safety, stage management, and design/implementation of sets, props, lighting, and sound.

  • Provide instruction, mentorship, and skill development support to Morning Mentors.

 

Production Leadership

  • Lead all technical elements of CTE productions, including set design, construction, painting, and overall technical execution.

  • Collaborate with Program Director and Workshop Directors to ensure cohesive integration of technical and artistic elements.

  • Supervise Production Team and Tech Team participants throughout rehearsals, performances, and strike.

 

Program Collaboration & Operations

  • Work as part of the faculty team to plan schedules, activities, and rehearsals.

  • Support daily workshop operations, including participation in planning/prep sessions and debrief meetings.

  • Conduct circle groups and contribute to the student experience in alignment with CTE philosophy.

 

Training & Meetings

  • Attend required retreats, planning meetings, parent meetings, and staff trainings.

  • Co-plan and participate in all Faculty/Staff and Mentor training sessions.

 

Communication & Coordination

  • Maintain regular communication with the Program Director and other faculty/staff.

  • Collaborate across departments to coordinate technical needs and ensure smooth production processes.

 

Budget & Resource Management

  • Plan and manage workshop-related technical expenses within the approved budget.

  • Submit receipts and documentation for all purchases in a timely manner.

 

Program Setup & Wrap-Up

  • Participate in program setup prior to the summer session.

  • Lead and assist in technical strike, cleanup, and end-of-program debrief.

 

Additional Duties

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support program success.

Qualifications

  • Experience in technical theatre, including set construction, lighting, sound, and stage management.

  • Experience teaching or mentoring youth in a theatre or educational setting preferred.

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate in a team-oriented environment.

  • Dynamic, fast-paced summer program environment.

  • Requires hands-on technical work, collaboration, and flexibility across multiple productions.
